Shut off water without restricting flow
A ball valve always retains a bit of material in the passage, even when fully open. The slide valve, however, clears the path completely: the passage is full, with the same diameter as the pipe.
For a suction line where every inch of head loss counts, or for a 2½ in line that you do not want to restrict, this is the right choice.

Frequently asked questions
Slide valve or ball valve?
The slide valve offers a full port and is less expensive. The ball valve operates with a quarter-turn and handles frequent opening and closing better.
Can it be operated under pressure?
It is designed for isolation, not for continuous flow adjustment. Open it or close it completely.
Is the handle accessible in a pit?
The stem has a ¼ in-20 thread that accepts a 3 or 4 in extension.
