The pre-filter basket is what prevents leaves, gravel, and objects that have fallen into the skimmer from reaching the pump impeller. A damaged impeller costs much more than a basket.
Plastic becomes brittle over the seasons. A fine crack is not visible at first glance but allows enough debris through to cause damage.
The rim counts as much as the bottom: a basket with a deformed rim no longer sits flat and leaves an opening on the side.

Take it out, rinse it, then look at it against the light. Cracks appear clearly this way. Also check that the rim is straight.
