Two situations where it is essential
The equipment is below the water line. As soon as you open the pump or filter cover, the pool water flows back toward you by gravity. The check valve blocks this backflow and lets you work.
The pool has an overflowing spa or a water feature. When the pump stops, the water from the high point flows back down to the low point and empties the spa into the pool. The valve prevents this gravity-driven circulation.

Frequently asked questions
Why a transparent body?
To see if the flap opens and closes without having to disassemble it. This is the most common failure on this type of valve, and the hardest to diagnose otherwise.
Which way should it be installed?
In the direction of the arrow molded on the body, which indicates the permitted flow. If installed upside down, it completely blocks circulation.
Does it reduce flow?
Very little: 1 lb/in² of pressure drop at 60 GPM on the 1½ in model.
