In brief: 22-inch Pentair Cristal-Flo II sand filter, model CF1122. Filter area of 2.6 sq. ft., 250 lb sand capacity, 60 GPM flow rate, 1.5-inch 6-position multiport valve included. One-piece molded polyethylene tank. Pentair part number 145361.
The most common size for a residential pool
With a flow rate of 60 GPM and 250 lb of sand, the 22-inch Cristal-Flo II is suitable for most inground and above-ground pools equipped with a medium-power pump.
The tank is molded from polyethylene in one piece: there is no seam halfway up the tank, so there is no risk of leaks there. The six-position multiport valve mounts on top and provides access to filter, backwash, rinse, recirculate, drain, and closed settings.

A note about maximum pressure
Pentair's brochure lists 50 psi for the 24- and 26-inch models and 35 psi for models 20 inches and smaller. The 22-inch model falls into neither category, and Pentair does not publish a separate value for it. We'd rather say so than make up a number: refer to your filter's nameplate for the maximum operating pressure.
Regarding unions: Pentair does not publicly document which part numbers are supplied with or without unions. The union kit is sold separately under number 150119 for a 1.5-inch valve.
Frequently asked questions
Which pump is suitable for this filter?
A pump with a filtration flow rate no higher than 60 GPM. A variable-speed pump elegantly solves the problem: it can run below this threshold for filtration and only reach it for backwashing.
What sand should I buy, and how much?
250 lb of #20 silica sand in white quartz, 0.40 to 0.55 mm. That's five 50 lb bags. Confirm the capacity on your filter's nameplate before buying.
When should I backwash?
When the pressure rises about 8 to 10 psi above the starting pressure, measured with a clean filter. Record this baseline when you open the pool.
Which replacement valve?
The 1.5-inch Hi-Flow 6-way multiport valve has Pentair part number 262506. The clamp is part 152165, and the pressure gauge is part 190059.
