Want to swim in May and September without doubling your gas bill?
In Quebec, the usable season for an unheated pool lasts barely ten weeks. A gas heater solves the problem, but it costs a lot to run every day. That’s where a heat pump changes the equation: it doesn’t produce heat; it moves it. It captures heat from the outdoor air and transfers it to the water, allowing it to deliver several times the energy it consumes.
The Hayward HeatPro MCHX 110,000 BTU uses a microchannel heat exchanger, a first in the pool industry according to Hayward. Its heat-transfer surface is denser, which improves heat transfer.

What to know before you buy
A heat pump warms the water slowly but steadily. It won’t replace a gas heater for bringing a cold pool up to temperature in a day, but it costs a fraction as much to run all summer. Its performance drops as the air cools, which is why the minimum temperature of 4 °C matters when opening the pool in May and closing it in September. A solar cover changes the equation completely because it reduces overnight heat loss that the heat pump would otherwise have to make up during the day.
Frequently asked questions
What electrical rating do I need?
Hayward specifies a maximum 40 A breaker at 220/240 V. The circuit must be dedicated and installed by a master electrician: in Quebec, electrical work must be carried out by a contractor holding the appropriate licence.
How much clearance is needed around the unit?
12 in. on the sides and rear, and 72 in. above. A heat pump wedged against a wall or beneath a balcony recirculates its own cold air and loses efficiency.
What is the lowest temperature at which it operates?
Hayward specifies a minimum operating temperature of 40 °F, approximately 4 °C.
110,000 or 140,000 BTU?
It depends on the pool’s volume, wind exposure, and whether you have a solar cover. Give us those three details and we’ll work it out with you.
