In brief: 19.5-inch Pentair Sand Dollar sand filter, model SD40. 1.80 sq. ft. filtration area, 150 lb sand capacity, 40 GPM flow rate. Clamp-style 6-position multiport valve included, one-piece thermoplastic tank. Pentair part number 145349.
Pentair's compact sand filter
The Sand Dollar is Pentair's line of blow-molded thermoplastic tank sand filters. Features a one-piece tank, a clamp-mounted six-position multiport valve, and a combination drain that discharges both water and sand when replacing media.
This last detail matters more than it seems: on a filter without a sand drain, changing the media requires emptying the tank by hand, bucket by bucket.
The 19.5-inch model is suitable for installations where the pump does not exceed 40 GPM.

Two honest clarifications
About the part number. SKU page 145349 does exist at Pentair and describes a top-mount Sand Dollar filter, thermoplastic tank with a clamp-style multiport valve. However, the precise association of this number with the SD40 model comes from distributors and not an official Pentair chart. If you need to match this filter to an existing installation, please confirm with us.
About the maximum pressure. Pentair does not publish a maximum operating pressure for the Sand Dollar line, neither in the brochure nor in the manual. Refer to the data plate on your filter.
Frequently asked questions
What sand and how much?
150 lb of standard #20 silica sand, particle size 0.45 to 0.55 mm, uniformity coefficient less than or equal to 1.75. This equals three 50 lb bags.
Which pump is suitable?
A pump whose filtration flow rate does not exceed 40 GPM. Beyond that, the water passes through the sand bed too quickly to be filtered properly.
Sand Dollar or Cristal-Flo II?
Both share the same blow-molded tank platform and several common parts, including the 152165 clamp and the 190059 pressure gauge. The Cristal-Flo II uses a 1.5-inch six-position valve, while the Sand Dollar uses a clamp-style valve. The choice is mainly based on the sizes offered and what is already installed at your home.
When to backwash?
When the pressure rises about 8 to 10 psi above the starting pressure measured with a clean filter.
