A cracked skimmer is an invisible leak
The skimmer is built into the wall and buried underground. When its body cracks, water flows directly into the backfill: no puddle, no visible trace, just a water level that drops faster than evaporation can explain.
Freezing is the most common cause in Quebec. A skimmer that hasn’t been properly winterized, or whose winterizing plug has failed, will split at the first hard freeze.
Replacement requires removing the liner. That’s why it’s wise to have the skimmers inspected when changing the liner, even if they appear to be in good condition.
