In brief: Pentair Tagelus TA60D sand filter with 2-inch Hi-Flow multiport valve. 24.5-inch reinforced fiberglass tank, 3.1 sq. ft. filter area, 60 GPM flow rate, 50 psi maximum operating pressure. Pentair part number 145385.
The Pentair fiberglass sand filter
The Tagelus is distinguished from other Pentair sand filters by its tank: a one-piece molded reinforced fiberglass unit, rather than the blow-molded thermoplastic used in the Cristal-Flo II and Sand Dollar lines. The sand bed is deeper, which accounts for the higher sand capacity compared to tanks of similar diameter.
It also tolerates hotter water: 104°F (40°C), compared to 95°F (35°C) for the Cristal-Flo II. This is an important factor for heated pools or pools connected to a spa.
This configuration comes with the six-position 2-inch Hi-Flow multiport valve.

About sand capacity
Two official Pentair documents are inconsistent on this point. The Tagelus brochure lists 325 lbs for the TA60D, while the installation manual lists 275 lbs for the TA60 and TA60D. The same 50 lb discrepancy exists for the TA40D and TA50D models.
The Pentair manual also specifies that the authoritative specifications are those found on the filter's data plate. You should therefore check this plate before purchasing the sand. We will not arbitrate on behalf of the manufacturer.
Frequently asked questions
What kind of sand should I use?
Standard #20 silica sand, with a grain size of 0.44 to 0.55 mm, and a uniformity coefficient of 1.75 or less. This is the specification Pentair publishes for its sand filters. Do not use construction sand or play sand: the grain size is not controlled and the filter will allow fine particles to pass through.
How often should the sand be changed?
Sand becomes rounded and clogged over the years. Replacement every five to seven years is a standard interval for residential use in Quebec. A filter that requires backwashing more and more frequently, or that does not return to its starting pressure after backwashing, is a sign that the media is at the end of its lifespan.
Tagelus, Cristal-Flo II, or Sand Dollar?
Three distinct platforms. The Tagelus features a reinforced fiberglass tank, a deeper sand bed, a Hi-Flow valve, and is rated for 104°F. The Cristal-Flo II and Sand Dollar share a blow-molded thermoplastic platform, with the Cristal-Flo II rated for 95°F. The Tagelus is the most robust of the three.
1.5 or 2 inches?
This configuration is supplied with the 2-inch valve. The TA60D is also available in a 1.5-inch version. Choose based on your existing plumbing: a 2-inch valve provides no benefit on 1.5-inch plumbing.
